Saratoga & Los Gatos: Silicon Valley's Most Charming Towns
Boutique downtowns, excellent schools, and a pace of life that feels genuinely unhurried — Saratoga and Los Gatos are the South Bay's most coveted small-town addresses.
Saratoga & Los Gatos: Silicon Valley's Most Charming Towns
At the western edge of Silicon Valley, where the valley floor meets the Santa Cruz Mountains, sit two towns that consistently rank among the most desirable addresses in the South Bay: Saratoga and Los Gatos.
Both offer something rare in Silicon Valley — a genuine small-town character, a walkable downtown, and a pace of life that feels unhurried despite being minutes from some of the world's most dynamic companies. For families who want the best of both worlds — Silicon Valley opportunity and small-town livability — these towns are hard to beat.
Saratoga: Quiet Elegance
Saratoga is one of the wealthiest cities in California, and it wears that distinction quietly. There are no ostentatious displays here — just beautiful homes on generous lots, tree-lined streets, and a community that values privacy and quality of life.
The Downtown Village
Saratoga's downtown — centered on Big Basin Way — is a charming collection of restaurants, wine bars, boutiques, and galleries. It's small by design, and that's part of its appeal. The Saratoga Village feels like a discovery rather than a destination, and the restaurants here are genuinely excellent.
The Schools
Saratoga is served by the Saratoga Union School District (K–8) and the Los Gatos–Saratoga Joint Union High School District, with Saratoga High School as the primary high school. Saratoga High consistently ranks among the top public high schools in California — it's the primary reason many families choose the city.
The Homes
Saratoga's housing stock ranges from mid-century ranches on flat lots to custom estates in the hills above the city. The flat areas near the downtown and the schools are most sought-after for families. Hillside properties offer dramatic views and privacy.
Prices in Saratoga typically start around $2.5M for entry-level single-family homes and extend well beyond $5M for larger properties and hillside estates.
The Outdoor Access
Saratoga's location at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains gives residents immediate access to Castle Rock State Park, the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail, and the Sanborn County Park. For outdoor enthusiasts, this is one of the best-positioned neighborhoods in the South Bay.
Los Gatos: Vibrant and Walkable
Los Gatos has a different energy than Saratoga — more vibrant, more walkable, with a downtown that's genuinely alive on a weekday afternoon. It's a town that people move to for the lifestyle and stay for the community.
The Downtown
Los Gatos's downtown — centered on Santa Cruz Avenue and North Santa Cruz Avenue — is one of the best in the South Bay. Independent restaurants, wine bars, coffee shops, boutiques, and the historic Los Gatos Cinema create a downtown that residents actually use, not just admire.
The Los Gatos Farmers Market, the downtown holiday events, and the year-round foot traffic give the town a community energy that's hard to replicate.
The Schools
Los Gatos is served by the Los Gatos Union School District (K–8) and the Los Gatos–Saratoga Joint Union High School District, with Los Gatos High School as the primary high school. Both the elementary district and the high school are excellent — consistently ranked among the best in Santa Clara County.
The Homes
Los Gatos has more housing variety than Saratoga — bungalows and cottages near the downtown, larger family homes in the surrounding neighborhoods, and hillside estates above the town. The walkable neighborhoods near the downtown are particularly sought-after.
Prices in Los Gatos typically start around $2M for entry-level single-family homes, with larger and more desirable properties ranging from $2.5M to $5M and beyond.
The Los Gatos Creek Trail
The Los Gatos Creek Trail runs through the heart of the town, connecting the downtown to Vasona Lake County Park and continuing north through Campbell and San Jose. It's a beloved community amenity — used daily by runners, cyclists, and families — and one of the things residents mention most when asked why they love living here.
Saratoga vs. Los Gatos: Which Is Right for You?
Both towns are exceptional. The choice often comes down to lifestyle preference:
Choose Saratoga if: You value quiet, privacy, and the absolute top of the school rankings. You prefer a more residential feel and don't need a vibrant downtown within walking distance.
Choose Los Gatos if: You want walkability, a vibrant downtown, and a community with more energy. You value the Los Gatos Creek Trail and the town's active community calendar.
Both are excellent choices for families who want the best Silicon Valley has to offer.
